From the album should i give it up?
This is about the specific terror of being good enough to dream but not sure enough to bet everything on it. Gordon is not asking if she should quit music. She is asking if wanting hometown glory and a house for her dad makes her delusional. The question in the title never gets answered because the real question is whether ambition this personal can justify the risk.
If I give it up / I won't be the greatest in my hometown
The stakes are immediately small-scale and that is the point. She is not dreaming about stadiums or Grammys. She wants to be the best where people know her name, which makes the whole gamble feel simultaneously modest and impossible to walk away from.
I can't buy my dad a new house
This flips the first line from ego to obligation. The hometown glory was about her. The house is about paying back someone who probably supported this whole fragile dream. Now quitting means failing him too.
Am I good at this? / Am I really good at this?
The second question is not emphasis. It is doubt eating the first question alive. She asks it once like she wants an answer and again like she already knows the answer is no.
Do I call my bluff? / Am I being quick to judge?
Calling your own bluff means admitting you were never serious. Being quick to judge means maybe you are giving up too early. She has framed it so that quitting is wrong and staying is also wrong.
Say it again, say it again / With a little luck / And a lot of love
She is begging someone to repeat the question because hearing it out loud might make the answer clear. The luck and love line reads like a reassurance she does not believe. If it takes luck, she is not in control. If it takes love, effort might not be enough.
The song ends without answering the title question because there is no answer that does not hurt. Staying means risking everything on a dream she is not sure she deserves. Quitting means admitting the people at her shows and the dad waiting for the house were betting on the wrong person. Gordon leaves it hanging because that is where she actually is.
