From the album Zero
Alewya is tracking two kinds of flight at once. The runner sprints away from everything known, and the woman cannot recognize her own value because she has disconnected from origin. Both are strangers to their own fruit. The urgency of 'I need you now' lands like an intervention for someone mid-collapse, but the speaker might be describing her own flight too.
When a runner don't see no medal / Running from all he's scared of
The runner runs FROM but never TO. No finish line, no arrival point. The absence of destination turns flight into its own trap.
When a woman don't know she know she's special / Calling from your utero / Stranger to your fruit
The genealogy here cuts off halfway. Utero gets named but no father, no masculine lineage. Being a stranger to your own fruit means you grew something and cannot recognize it as yours.
Time to burn off the roozer / Time to cut off the nooser
Roozer might be ruse. Nooser is noose. Burning off the lie, cutting the rope. The phonetic play makes violence sound like slang, like something you could do casually on your way out the door.
I need you now / Beneath the rubble / Must've you forgot where you're from
The accusation is also a confession. Saying 'you forgot where you're from' while demanding someone come back suggests the speaker has also forgotten, is also buried, is also running. I need you now reads like panic.
I say no more, no mourning
The entire song is elegiac. No mourning gets announced inside a structure that mourns the runner who will not stop and the woman who cannot see herself. The command not to mourn is itself mourning.
Alewya wrote a song about flight that doubles as a mirror. The runner does not see the medal, the woman does not know she is special, and the speaker needs you now beneath the rubble. All three might be the same person. The song never resolves whether it is calling someone back or describing why they cannot return.
Runner by Alewya tracks two simultaneous escapes, in Scalpel's line-by-line reading: the runner fleeing everything familiar and a woman severed from her origins who cannot see her own worth. The repeated plea "I need you now" functions as an intervention for someone collapsing, though the speaker may be describing her own flight as well.
"Runner" by Alewya explores running until you forget the start, violence you do to yourself sounds casual, being a stranger to what you made, and the womb as the only claimed origin. The central thread is running until you forget the start: The runner and the woman both sever connection to origin, turning flight into permanent exile from the self. These themes come from Scalpel's line-by-line analysis of the lyrics.
"Runner" by Alewya was released on June 26, 2026 on the album "Zero". Scalpel's analysis covers the full lyrics of the 2026 release.
Scalpel's line-by-line analysis of "Runner" by Alewya lands here: Alewya wrote a song about flight that doubles as a mirror. The runner does not see the medal, the woman does not know she is special, and the speaker needs you now beneath the rubble.
