From the album Don't Want A Love Song - Single
This is a song about being trapped in emotional purgatory with someone who has already emotionally left. Barnes is not fighting to save the relationship. He is bargaining for scraps, asking to be kept around even though he can see the rejection written all over their face.
I don't really want a love song / 'Cause you have my heart, don't tear it apart
Barnes rejects romance while simultaneously begging for tenderness. The contradiction is the whole point. He knows love songs promise happy endings, and this is not heading there.
We're in a liminal space / I really thought for a moment that we were in motion but that went away
Liminal means stuck between states, not moving forward or back. Barnes thought they were building toward something. Now he realizes they are just hovering in place.
Call me so I can be what you need when you're all alone / Call me if you feel like changin' your mind 'cause I'll give you more
He is offering to be a convenience. Not a partner, just someone available when loneliness hits. The desperation is in how little he is asking for.
I'm in love, oh, I'm in love / Oh, I wish I never met you
The song ends on both statements at once. He is still in love and he wishes he had never felt it. There is no resolution because the relationship never gave him one.
Barnes is not asking to be loved. He is asking not to be abandoned. The song stays stuck in that liminal space he names, never moving toward acceptance or anger, just circling the same plea. The wish he never met them is the closest he gets to an exit.
