This is a song about surviving creative block by lowering the stakes. Barnett watches a praying mantis and realizes she has been waiting for perfect inspiration when the real work is just showing up anyway. The mantis becomes proof that meaning does not announce itself, you just keep going and find it in whatever crosses your path.

She is looking for something unnamed, maybe inspiration, maybe momentum. The vagueness is the point. Creative people know this feeling of returning to work and finding nothing there.

She is talking to herself here, seeing through her own excuses. The phone book image is perfect because it is obsolete, like trying to find answers in outdated systems. She catches herself mid-thought and considers starting over.

The mantis is not symbolic. It is just there. Barnett projects her search for meaning onto it, which reveals her own desperation for signals. Sometimes a bug is just a bug, but when you are stuck, everything feels like it might be a message.

She wants the ordinary to feel magical but admits she is just numbing herself through routine. Then she undercuts her own perfectionism by acknowledging perfect songs do not exist while admitting she still looks for them. That tension is the whole creative struggle.
I got my head sorted sort of, I keep / Going, just because yeah just because
The repetition lands like a mantra she is testing out. She has not figured anything out and the 'sort of' admits it. But she keeps going anyway, not for a reason, just because that is what you do. The lack of resolution is the resolution.
The mantis never does anything. It just sits there. Barnett keeps writing anyway. Sometimes the best you can do is show up and call that enough, even when nothing clicks. The song does not fix her, it just documents the decision to keep trying.
