From the album Let's Start Degeneracy
This is about someone who weaponizes self-destruction as identity. They are not trying to get better. They are performing their own collapse while treating everyone around them like collateral damage.
You missed your flight out to New York / Now you're back here killing swallows / And boarding up the doors
The missed flight is not bad luck. It is self-sabotage followed by petty violence. Killing swallows is needlessly cruel, the act of someone who wants to make their spiral everyone else's problem.
Spinning on in absolution / Cause none of its your fault
That line reads like sarcasm at first but it is how they actually think. They have convinced themselves they are a victim of circumstance while actively making everything worse.
Paint yourself into a corner / With your bridges all ablaze
Two different self-trap metaphors stacked on top of each other. This person does not accidentally isolate themselves. They engineer it and then act shocked when they are alone.
Are you hearing voices now? / Holding your breath until you pass out / Still inside a burning house
The question lands like an accusation. The burning house is their own doing but they are treating it like something happening to them. The breath-holding feels like testing how much suffering they can perform before someone intervenes.
What's it like to be a martyr? / Or is it god you blame? / Are you looking for a new god / Or do you learn from your mistakes?
Four questions that all point at the same dodge. Martyrdom, god, a new belief system. Anything but accountability. The last question is rhetorical because the answer is obviously no.
The narrator is not asking these questions hoping for answers. They already know this person will pick martyrdom over growth every time. The song is an exit interview.
