From the album blue - Single
This is a love song built entirely in the conditional tense. yung kai never claims to be with this person. Every moment lives in 'would,' 'could,' 'I'll imagine.' The whole thing is a daydream spoken out loud, romantic but never quite real.
Your morning eyes, I could stare like watching stars / I could walk you by, and I'll tell without a thought / You'd be mine
He starts with what he could do, not what he does. The shift from 'could' to 'would' in 'you'd be mine' keeps it hypothetical. Even the fantasy stays at arm's length.
Would you mind if i took your hand tonight / Know you're all that I want this life
The question is rhetorical because he never actually takes the hand. He wants permission for something he has already decided not to do. The longing is real but the action stays imaginary.
I'll imagine we fell in love / I'll nap under moonlight skies with you / I think I'll picture us, you with the waves
He keeps announcing the daydream instead of just living in it. 'I'll imagine,' 'I think I'll picture' pulls you out of the moment to remind you none of this is happening. It makes the fantasy feel lonelier.
My love will always stay by you / I'll keep it safe so don't you worry a thing
He promises to protect a love that does not exist yet. The reassurance has no one to receive it. He is comforting a version of this person he made up.
I'll trust the universe will always bring me to you
He hands the whole thing over to fate. If the universe does not deliver, he never has to risk actual rejection. Surrender here is safer than trying.
This song stays beautiful because it never risks becoming real. yung kai gets to feel everything without asking for anything back. The safety is the point, but it also means the love stays stuck in his head.
