Getting news secondhand means the narrator is still close enough to hear updates but too far to get them directly. Charlie becomes the messenger who accidentally delivers the thing they least wanted to know.
Life's so much better now that we don't speak / But there will always be parts of me that are yours
The first line sounds confident. The second one admits permanence. These two ideas cannot both be true, but the narrator believes them simultaneously because they are measuring progress by pain reduction, not actual freedom.
My fault for making believe / Mistook who you are for who you could be
This admits the narrator fell in love with their own projection, not the actual person. Calling it their fault suggests they blame themselves for expecting growth that never came, which might be why they are stuck between hating the ex and mourning the friendship.
I'm not trying to say that I want you back, but it's nice to linger in the past / Oh, it's good to know that you're not attached, but why does it trigger me so bad
Every claim gets immediately contradicted. The narrator does not want them back but likes revisiting the relationship. They are glad the ex is single but destroyed by the idea of them being happy with someone else. These are not mixed feelings. This is denial wearing the costume of ambivalence.
I care, I care, care, care
The word multiplies and stutters like the feeling keeps reproducing itself. Each repetition undermines the claim of being over it. By the end, caring is not an emotion. It is the loop the narrator cannot escape.
The song ends where it started, repeating 'I care' like a confession that will not stop coming. The narrator thought moving on meant feeling less, but it actually means watching someone be happy without you and surviving it. They are not there yet.
