He positions himself as safe, polite, and charming, but the entire pitch is a performance of control dressed up as courtship. The more he insists you don't have to be afraid, the more obvious it becomes that fear is exactly the right response.

He floats the idea that his reputation might precede him, then immediately pivots to eye contact as proof of innocence. The logic is backwards: if she's heard things, looking harder won't make them untrue.

Saying 'never' four times in a row doesn't quadruple the reassurance. It just makes you sound like you're trying to convince yourself.

He pitches fantasies and then drops in a WWI battlefield reference like it's romantic. The tonal mismatch reveals he's selling adventure without understanding what any of it actually means.

He rebrands the pitch from youthful ambition to domestic calm, but calling yourself polite while angling someone into your house is the exact move a polite person wouldn't need to announce. The performance just shifted venues.
I think that you'd be the perfect woman on my arm / Don't have to be afraid, don't have to be alarmed
She's an accessory in this fantasy, not a participant. And then he says 'don't be alarmed' right after framing her as arm candy, as if the problem is her nervousness and not his entire approach.
He genuinely believes the problem is her hesitation, not his approach. The song ends with him chanting his own nickname like a mantra, still convinced that if he says it enough times, it'll become true. She was never the audience. He's been talking to himself the whole time.
